Castle Strecno
The romantic ruins of Strecno Castle tower over the channel of the Vah like a symbol of feudal power in the Central Povazie. Even though it has been a ruin for three centuries, the architecture that remains is able to document the development of the medieval fortress from the gothic to the baroque. Although the castle was only established in the middle of the 14th century, the site has been inhabited for much longer – archaeological discoveries show that the castle hill was already inhabited in the early Bronze Age. The first direct written reference to the castle dates from 1384 where it is referred to as \„comitatus castri Strechyn\“. Its eventful history lasted until the end of the 17th century when it was demolished on the orders of the emperor Leopold. Despite surviving less than four centuries, it changed hands many times. Its notable owners included the Pongrac family, Pavol Kinizi, and the Kostka, Dersfy and Wesselenyi families. Castle StrecnoCastle StrecnoHistorical and architectural studies laid the foundations for its partial reconstruction and conservation. The main gate, the main tower, the southern and northern palaces and the chapel were totally reconstructed. The greater part of the north tower and the forecourt were restored. Partial reconstruction of the east palace, the bulwark and the gun emplacements was also undertaken.
