Kosice – Museum of Aviation
The first museum of aviation in Slovakia documents the development of aviation and its technique since the beginning up to 1943. the museum was open on the 24th of August 2002 at the airport in Košice. The idea of creating a museum rose at the time of creating the Technical Museum in 1947. The history of ballooning is strictly connected with Košice. The second airport, after Bratislava, was built here in 1924. At present Gen. Milan Rastislav Štefánik Military Air Academy and Technical University are situated at the area. The academy provided hangars for the museum. There are more than 30 machines and instruments, engines, measuring and navigation elements used in aeroplanes are shown inside and outside the museum. The most interesting collection is formed by a group of planes. They are mainly military planes MIG-15, MIG-21, helicopters, pursuit planes SU-22, an attacking pursuer SU-15 TM (a gift of the president of Ukraine Kuchma in 14.06.2001), agricultural plane Z-37 A „čmeliak“, glider VT 116 Orlík, ultra light Mitchel B-10. The exposition contains 18 original flying machines, 24 engines from 1915/16 till modern engines R 13 F2 S-300, and about 50 models of planes.
