Levice – Tekov Museum

The Tekov Museum was founded in 1927 thanks to Joseph Necsey, postmaster at Vrable who donated an extensive and valuable collection to the town Levice. The Museum gradually collected ethnographic, historical, archaeological, natural history and art objects. In its research and collecting activity it focuses on the Levice district, and in the natural history domain, on the entire eastern part of the Danube hilly country, Stiavnica hills, the south-western slopes of Pohronsky Inovec and the western slopes of the Krupina plateau, in the ethnographic area on the territory of the southern part of the former Tekov zhupa and the western part of Hont. In its ethnographic collections, the most numerous are potters´ products, folk costumes and textiles, in its historical section are products of guilds and crafts, military weaponry from earliest times, products of glass and porcelain, in its numismatic department it has Roman coins, silver and copper noins from the Hungarian area, in that of fine art there are works by artists originating from Levice and its environs. The natural history collections comprise abundant herbalist specimens of the local flora (particularly bents, hawthorns and lichens), preparations of birds, predators and forest animals, collections of butterflies and moths, longicorns and bumble bees. Since 1958 the museum is located in a Renaissance manor near ruins of a Gothic castle from the end of the 13th century. The manor was built in 1571 in the lower courtyard on orders of the castle captain, the zhupan (head) of the Tekov stolitsa (comitat) Stefan Doboo.
