Levoca – Spis Museum

The Spiš Museum was founded in 1884 on the initiative of the Spiš History Association which was also concerned with acquiring historical objects. Since its foundation the Museum pursues three basic areas-history, art history and ethnography of the Spiš region in general, and of the town Levoča in particular. Initially, it had its headquarters in a Gothic house – the socalled Stallung in Mäsiarska Str.; in 1955 it acquired the building of the Levoča Town Hall in which it then installed a historical exhibition. During 1968–1990 it processed the national cultural monument – St. James's church at Levoča, and in January 1989 took over the management of the Spis castle. 1.4.2002 was Spiš Museum jointly with Slovak national museum (SNM).
