Liptovsky Mikulas – Janko Kral Museum

The Janko Kráľ museum was established in 1955 as a District Museum of National Geography named after a Mikuláš native, a poet Janko Kráľ. Thus considerable efforts and ambitions of supporters and activists of cultural movements of that time culminated such as Janko Alexy, Alfonz Groma, Július Lenko, Daniel Šefčík, Mikuláš Štalmach, Ján Kamhal and others who strove to enforce the idea of creating such a museum in Liptovský Mikuláš looking for support in the town, the district and also in Bratislava. The museum was situated in the Illéšházy manor-house, which was the first County house, later known as Selingov house in which condemnation of the national hero, the outlaw Juraj Jánošík probably took place. Latin text concerning buying the house by the County is placed on a board in the underpass of the museum. The first director of the museum, JUDr. Martin Martinček led the preparatory work of the rising Janko Kráľ literary and historical museum. After solving numerous difficulties, the museum was eventually successfully open in 1961. At present the Janko Kráľ museum explores, documents, preserves, protects and presents collections – funds of historical, ethnographical and artistic nature which are connected with development of Liptovský Mikuláš and writers of Liptov region. The museum also documents contemporary life and happenings in the town for needs of the town chronicle.
