Liptovsky Mikulas – Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology

The Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology (SMNPaS) was founded as an associative museum under the name Museum of the Slovak Karst in 1930. Since its foundation it collected not only natural history objects, but primarily speleological collections, and also those from ethnography, history and archaeology. During the first years of its existence it was oriented to the Slovak Karst and the region of Upper Liptov. Since 1949 it exclusively follows karst formations and speleology in Slovakia. In 1970–1981 the SMNPaS formed one of the of the components in the organization of Slovak spelunking. Since 1981 its activity has been extended to include nature protection in Slovakia. The museum's principal building is at 4, Školská Str. It is a former Jesuits cloister from the middle of 18th century which the Museum acquired in 1949.
