Martin – Museum of the Slovak Village

The open-air Museum of the Slovak Village shows the folk architecture, type of dwelling and lifestyle of traditional rural communities in Slovakia from the 19th to early 20th century. The original concept for this exhibition originated in 1930 (D. Jurkovič, J. Geryk). The first objects were acquired in 1940 (A. Polonec). The present-day exhibition began its formation in 1967. The exhibition opened in 1972, illustrating the Oravian region (1971), Kysuce – Javorníky (1972, 1986) and Liptov (1976). At present, an exhibit is being designed about the Turiec region. In the exploration section (Orava region) the most valuable buildings are a yeoman's manor from Vyšný Kubín with a plastered dwelling log house having an upper pantry and a interior gallery (1748), a farmstead from Jasenová with a log-house having a cellar below a raised foundation and a built-in gallery, farm machinery and implements in the out buildings (1845). The farmstead from Novoť (1840) is a joint house and barn with an oven and a hearth; the interior room holds an exhibition of life from end of the 19th century in the Goral area of northern Orava. Of interest is a street with two blocks of gabled houses from Hruštín (from the turn of the century), a farm house from Veličná (1866) with an upper pantry, a interior gallery and demonstrating the mode of dwelling and linen processing from the 2nd half of the 19th century, a farmstead from Zázrivá (1865) with a bell-making workshop. Visitors may also view a Renaissance- Baroque single-nave small church from Rudno (Turiec, 1790–92) with an illusive painting in the interior, seasonal field stables made of logs from north-western Slovakia, farmsteads from Vavrišov, a block of four houses and a semi-detached house from Hubová, a farmstead from Liptovská Sielnica. Agricultural exhibitions show the cultivation of traditional plants, trees, spices, medicinal and magic herbs.
