Nitra Museum at Nitra

The Nitra Museum (NM) a facility of the regional type, pursues collection activity in the Nitra district from the domain of botany, zoology, archaeology, history, ethnography and numismatics. The first collectors of museum items and founders of the museum at Nitra were professors and students of the Piarist Gymnasium. They put their collection on view to the public in May 1878 under the heading Collection of Antiquities of the Nitra Zhupa of the R.-C. Higher Grammar School. This collection came to be the basis for Zhupa Museum at Nitra, founded in 1896 and solemnly open in 1900. It remained on the Piarist's premises during the subsequent years. It was abolished in 1951 – 1962, and when reinstaled, it was housed in the building of the Grand Seminary. In 1990 it was moved to the Town Hall. The museum has its seat in Neo-Renaissance building, put up in 1880 as the Town Hall according to projects by the Nitra architect Ján Lyka (the building is a cultural monument).
