Nova Bana – Pohronie Museum
The predecessor of the present museum – the Municipal Museum – was founded in 1952 on the initiative of the antiquities collector Anton Solcansky. In 1988 it was turned into a museum with a local history orientation for the region of the middle Hron river know as Pohronie restricted to the Ziar area. The headquarters of the museum are in the former Town Hall – originally a four-storey Gothic building from the 2nd half of the 14th century rebuilt in the mid-18th century. It is a cultural monument. Included in the collections are archaeological finds, objects recalling mining, crafts and folk production (pottery, glass-making, woodcarving), weapons, numismatics, but particularly the town Nova Bana which entered history in 1772 by introducing the first atmospheric engine for pumping water from mines. This model is one of the most valuable exhibits in the museum, similarly as models of stamping-mills, wooden statues from the 15th, 18th and 19th centuries, guild chests, glass-paintings and objects documenting the rich local customs and practices.
