Zilina – Povazie Museum
Povazie museum belongs among the biggest Slovak museums. It was established in 1942 as a municipal museum, at present it is a regional institution with Slovakia-wide activity in the field of tinker trade and transport. In its depositories, there are about 100 000 pieces of collected objects from the area of natural sciences, archaeology, Povazie museum – Budatin Chateau history and ethnography. It has its seat in Budatin Chateau, in a suburb of the town of Zilina. Also other historical buildings belong to it – an attractive medieval castle of Strecno and two objects of folk architecture in the typical village of Cicmany. Povazie museum in Zilina is the only museum in the worid to be concerned with systematic documentation of the tinker trade. Within the range of its research activity, it surveys both historical and present demonstrations of the craft on the whole territory of the Slovak Republic and abroad. The tinker fund of the museum, comprising almost 2 500 pieces of collected objects, represents the biggest collection of this kind in the world. It has concentrated many tinker tools, aids, utility and art objects of wire and tin, written documents and photographs, as well as various curiosities. It owns an extraordinary rare collection of naive art consisting of wire sculptures representing human figures (even live-size), fairy tale creatures, animals and birds. The most attractive and interesting exhibits are on display in the permanent exposition designed in the form of a big bird cage, which is a world unique.
