City Poprad rised gradually from 5 different small towns. The royal town Spišská Sobota was the wealthiest of them. The town has been most valueble as far as artistic and historical qualities are concerned. Forum Sabathe (Saturday market) was the first known name of the town. This fact is supported by written evidence from the year 1256. Different forms of trade were concentrated here, the town was the seat of guilds, center of cultural life and later also local authorities center of 5 Upper Spiš towns. Because of its intact medieval urbanistic character the town was declared Town monument reservation, which is unique collection of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Gothic catholic Saint George church dominates the Spišská Sobota square. Its Gothic altar made in the atelier of Master Paul from Levoča belongs along with Levoča's altar to European cultural jewels.
